Acne during pregnancy

Acne during pregnancy

Increased hormones called androgens can cause production of sebum, an oily, waxy substance. This can eventually lead to the inflammation and skin eruptions of bacteria, acne and breakouts. Women who are prone to breakouts during their menstrual periods are more prone of getting acne during pregnancy. Around 50% of pregnant women are developing acne at some stage during their pregnancy. Pregnancy and postpartum acne is usually temporary. It will clear up once the hormones return to normal.

Acne during pregnancy can be mild, moderate, or severe, and tend to appear primarily on the face, particularly in the T-zone which includes the forehead, the nose and the chin. Some women also experience acne on their chest and back, particularly across their shoulders.

But, it’s good to understand that pregnancy acne is a result of excessive hormones. These hormones are necessary to stabilize the pregnancy and support the baby’s growth and help to direct nutrition which is essential for the baby’s survival.

There isn’t any particular way to prevent the appearance of the pregnancy acne but, there are many ways of treating them in a right way.

  • Use warm water and wash gently with a mild soap or cleanser twice a day - more than this can lead to the skin drying out
  • Use a gentle scrub to help unblock clogged pores
  • Rinse skin and pat dry with a soft towel without rubbing it and consider of replacing the towel several times a week
  • Use an oil free moisturizer or facial serum
  • Don't squeeze, rub, or pop your pimples
  • Avoid any sun exposure
  • If you wear makeup, use products that are water-based
  • Change your pillow case at least twice a week
